What makes us happy? In
life? In business? In daily relationships?
Funny questions to ask
when you think about using an email newsletter system … but that’s what we
try to do: make our users happier. So asking these questions about a small
business tool is not so inappropriate.
We have spent COUNTLESS
hours over the years asking small business owners about their most urgent
business needs. Some of the most common answers:

more time to do everything
I need to do
-
less stress
-
more time with my family
in “balance” with my business

more people that know
about my business
-
happier staff
-
easier systems
You may notice that money
isn’t mentioned in any of these responses. Of course money is at the root
of their business challenges: that’s the nature of business. But as they
talk about their needs, they articulate what we call “happiness issues”:
The day-to-day experience of business; The issues that make our day a
living hell or heaven; Relationships with customers and staff.
Here is a typical
testimonial from a Communiqué customer that illustrates this point:

Note that the small
business owner didn’t say: “it has increased our return on marketing
investment; Communiqué saves us money and adds more revenue straight to the
bottom line!”
Those financial benefits
are true, but the small business owner cared most that it saved them time
and made them feel happy (“I love it”).
In designing the
Communiqué system to make people happy, one of the key things we did was
look at other email marketing systems to see what was making people
un-happy. Actually we tried to build our own newsletter to market to our
customers in the most popular system on the market. What we found was the
following:

it was hard to figure out
how to make something look as professional as we wanted our newsletter to
look
-
we spent many
hours just building a simple newsletter with 3 article elements
-
we had to stay late at
work, and
-
we had to finish it at
home over the weekend to find the time to concentrate on building the final
published email

our staff people didn’t
want to have to take it on because it was too complex
-
what we finally sent
didn’t make that much of an impact on our customers so we knew we needed to
be thinking more about what was in our newsletters than on constructing
them.
So we asked ourselves a
few radical questions:
1.
how could we
reduce the time to build a newsletter from 6-10 hours of work to 6-10
MINUTES!
2.
how could we
make the process of finding meaningful content for our customers and
inserting it into a newsletter an easy process for ANYONE, whether they are
professional marketers or not?
3.
how could we
make it even FUN to build a newsletter in 6-10 minutes, so anyone on our
staff would "happily" take it on?
4.
How could we
make the newsletter system a money-maker for the small business owner as
well as a retention marketing tool?

The thing we like so much about this customer's
comment is the kind of customer this represents. Curves Fitness
Club owners are typically ladies over 40 who would not consider themselves
to be super-experienced software users and few of them have a professional
marketing background. So the comment "This
is a tool for us ... " is really saying
something about how easy
Communiqué is!

Why is
Communiqué "brilliant"? There
are actually a lot of reasons, but it's really not so brilliant, we just
listened to customers and figured out what their biggest problems were with
getting out a regular marketing newsletter.
Problem #1: It takes too long
Communiqué Solution: we
reduced the time required to produce a
beautiful, professional newsletter to under 10
minutes.
Problem #2: I don't understand graphic
formatting

figured out how to let people do their
formatting in software systems of their choice,
like WORD, and quickly copy/paste it into their
